I would think that the Canon version would have better electrical contacts and would be made to more exacting standards though the Opteka should work fine. You do not need special batteries for the grip.

The Opteka grip is just peachy, no problem at all.
Now, the battery grips DO NOT work across product lines. The current Rebel XT grip has been carried across the Rebel line, and will ONLY work with the Rebel series from XT on.

No, it won't fit another model. The one for 5D won't fit the 5DM2 either.

that's the difficulty with canons.i use the eos 450d which uses a diff batt grip from the 400d and 350d.the manual has a illustration at the back anyway of which Accessories are compatible with your camera.
